Brown Rice vs. White Rice
Dear Practice Members,
Today’s topic has the ability to help you optimize your health and cut your risk of diabetes…all with a simple change in your dinner order!
Next time you’re at your favorite Chinese restaurant, order brown rice instead of the white. Why? Brown rice is the whole grain before it has been stripped of its bran outer layer, which is high in fiber and nutrients. Once that layer has been removed, the white rice that remains is mostly starch.
Brown rice also has a lower glycemic index than white rice, so it does not raise blood sugar levels as rapidly. A recent study by a team of researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health published in the Archives of Internal Medicine adds to the data that brown rice is the healthier choice. Study participants who ate two or more servings of brown rice per week reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by about 10 percent! Pretty cool huh?
So, just a little tip to help you be healthier, and avoid a disease that is sweeping our nation.
Be well…
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince

Great time at our “Dinner with the Doc!”
Hello Practice Members and Friends,
We had a great time last night at our Dinner with the Doc! I just wanted to thank the patients who brought their friends and family, namely Monica, Brenda and Jamie. It’s means so much to me that you took the time out of your busy schedule and brought someone you felt could be benefited by natural health and chiropractic.
We had a great discussion talking about the health of our nation and how to make changes in our own lives. One stat that I could tell really shocked people was that the USA represents 5% of the world’s population but we consume 75% of all the presrciption drugs created in the world! Is that crazy or what???
If we can just stop putting the junk in our bodies (like the drugs and junk food) and remove the interference to the nervous system (by getting our spines checked and adjusted) we would be happier, less stressed, sleep better – I guarantee it!
Thanks again to all who were there and I’ve already set the date for the next Dinner, August 24th. So mark your calendars and until then…Be Well.
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince

Our (almost famous) “Dinner with the Doc!
Dear Practice Members and Friends,
It’s baaaaacccckkkk! Dinner with the Doc, this Tuesday (the 27th) at Oscars down the street. What is Dinner with the Doc you say???
Well, many times I have Practice Members who say, “you know doc, there’s someone i know who needs your help, but I can’t get them to come in.” So I started the Dinners as a way to have a fun, informative evening where my Practice Members can invite those friends or family members to hear me talk about the benefits of Chiropractic, how it can help their condition…all while enjoying a nice relaxed dinner.
I then answer any questions the guests have and offer them to come into the office to get evaluated. Sound good?? Just call the office at 253-471-1289 to RSVP!
Looking forward to seeing you there
Be well,
Dr. Vince

Common Questions About Chiropractic Answered!
Dear Practice Members and Friends,
Today we’re going to revisit some common questions about chiropractic, and if you know someone who could benefit from this information, please send them to this blog!
Do I have a slipped disc?
Between each pair of spinal bones is a disc. It’s fibrous outer ring holds in a jelly-like material. This soft cernter serves as a “ball bearing” for joint movement. Because of the way it attaches to the spinal bone above and below it, a disc can’t acutally “slip.” However, a disc can bulge. It can tear. It can herniate. It can think adn it can dry out. And it can collapse. But it can’t slip.
What is a subluxation?
Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system. Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue. Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working right. Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine, can interfere with this vital exchange of information. This is a subluxation and this is what chiropractors adjust to correct. When this information is interfered with, the organs and tissues can become compromised.
How do you get subluxations?
There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions and improper lifting. Emotions such as grief, anger, and fear cause subluxations. Chemical causes include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet.
I hope this is helpful and in the next blog post, we’ll go over some other very common questions about chiropractic. See you soon and don’t forget about Dinner with the Doc coming up! July 27th, call the office for details!
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince

A Natural Cure For Depression???
Hello Practice Members, Dr. Vince here…with a very important blog post today that affects a lot of us here in the sun deprived state of Washington: Depression.
Is there a natural cure for depression? Without taking the nasty prescription drugs with those hideous side effects?
New research shows that an all natural solution might be a good alternative. The name? St. John’s Wort.
Despite the strange odd name, St. John’s Wort has been used since the middle ages and even some accounts trace its use back to the ancient Greeks.
In the September 2000 issue of the British Medical Journal a study was conducted that showed 324 patients with mild to moderate depression received 250 mg of pharmacy grade St Johns Wort or 75 mg of Imipramine, twice daily.
After six weeks of treatment both patients had the same outcome. But the patients who used St. John’s Wort reported way fewer adverse reactions.
Some countries (outside the U.S., which is overrun by Pharmaceuticals and their $45 Billion in yearly marketing) have been utilizing St. John’s Wort to treat depression more frequently than other well known depression medications like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Hmmm, something to think about eh?
If you know someone that is suffering from depression and the side effects of the prescription drugs, send them to this blog and help ‘em out!
See you soon,
Dr. Vince Leone

Whew! The Marathon is finally over…
Dear Practice Members,
Well, half marathon actually…but still. It’s done and it feels like a huge weight off my shoulders. I’m very sore, in fact I could barely walk the rest of Saturday and Sunday, but I did it and the best part: No More Training!
So here’s how the day went:
We woke up at 4:30…am. As in it was still dark out. Left the house by 5:20 and got down to Safeco Field around 5:45 to catch the shuttle buses down to the starting line. The race had a total of 26,000 signed up and most of them were there trying to get on those darn buses. At one point there were two nicely organized lines…and then the closer we got to 6am (which is when they said theywere going to stop running) the lines just melted, think of a mosh pit with too many people in need of serious coffee.
But we made it down there with no serious injuries and the thing I couldn’t believe were the lines for the porta potties! They were like, 100-150 people deep! Man was I glad I did not have to pee!
So we took our place in the 33rd corral – that’s how they divided everyone up. You approximated how fast (or slow) you would run and then they divided you up accordingly. And then we were off…like a hurd of cats. Not too fast, there were a lot of walkers so it was kind of like playing human dodgeball.
The course was a nice run for the most part – the best being as we got up in Seattle and into Seward Park neighborhood, there was a nice stretch along Lake Washington. Then onto the I-90 and through the tunnel where there was a DJ on a flat bed truck just CRANKING tunes…I mean it was so loud in that tunnel, people were screaming and yelling, and the DJ just had a huge smile on his face.
Did I mention it was the Rock n Roll Marathon? There were bands about every mile playing on little temp stages…pretty cool.
So I was doing pretty good until about 8.5 miles…my wife Cheryl and I were keeping a decent pace…about 11 minute miles. Not record breaking, but not terrible. And then my right knee just started KILLING me. So I just toughed it out for another half mile and it calmed down. Then my LEFT knee started killing me. To the point that I was going slower and slower and seriously thought it may give out.
So I told Cheryl to just go ahead and I would do a slower pace…and basically limped, walked, ran for the last 4 miles. It was BRUTAL. I did NOT want to walk…that’s not why I signed up for this. But I basically had no choice but to walk, let my knee calm down, then run until I felt like I was gonna fall, then walk…you get the picture. It was a weird feeling…and I’ve played a lot of sports, from football, to hurdles in track, to water and snow skiing, nothing felt like this. It literally felt like the top half of my knee joint was gonna slide right off and totally disconnect with my lower leg. Not a fun feeling.
So it basically killed my time…but, I finished. And that is the most important part. Cheryl made it in about 2 hours 33 minutes and I was a stellar 2 hours and 47 minutes.
And that’s it! Great experience, highly recommend it, though I will not be doing one anytime soon
Thank you to everyone for their words of support and encouragement and I will post some pictures soon as they’re available.
Take care!
Dr. Vince

Statins And Their EFFECT On YOUR Hormones
As you already know, statin drugs such as Lipitor reduce total and LDL cholesterol and supposedly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Here’s the kicker though. As the use of statin drugs continues to increase everyday (and people have been taking statins for a prolonged period that is significantly longer than the time period required for testing drugs), the serious side effects of statins is affecting more and more people, than ever before.
Since the drug companies that manufacture these statins have become aware of the incidence of serious side effects, they added a WARNING to statin advertising that was NOT present in the earliest advertising for these drugs.
This warning states, “Unexplained muscle pain and weakness could be a sign of a rare, but serious side effect and should be reported to your doctor right away.”
People who take statin drugs need to heed this warning immediately because in extreme cases, the side effects of statins — ‘can be fatal’.
Muscle pain and muscle weakness are two of the main side effects of statin drugs.
Italian researchers, in a study of more than 3,400 men treated for erectile dysfunction (ED), found that those taking statins had lower levels of total and FREE testosterone than men NOT taking the drugs.
Statins were linked to a “reduced testicular volume” and a higher incidence of symptoms linked to “LOW testosterone levels”. Women can have low testosterone levels too.
And here’s something most people don’t realize. Decreased strength is a common side effect of continued statin use. This might be linked to reduced testosterone levels.
One problem with this study was that statin users had double the rate of high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are also linked to low testosterone levels and ED. (Journal Sexual Medicine, 7: 154701556, 2010)
Make sure you’re using the hormone crèmes daily as these all natural, easy-to-apply homeopathic crèmes can help you overcome and balance your low testosterone levels.

The Secret Link Between Posture and Pain
Dear Practice Members, Dr. Vince here…
Today’s topic is the Secret Link Between Neck Pain and Posture. Many people don’t realize how important it is to have a proper curve in the neck so that when you stand upright, your ears sit right over your shoulders.
When we lose the curve in the neck, we develop a syndrome called Forward Head Posture, which has many negative consequences. Headaches are one because there is tremendous strain in the upper neck where the nerves exit and control the muscles and blood supply to the head.
Neck and shoulder pain is another negative consequence from Forward Head Posture because as the head falls forward and gravity continues to weigh us down, the trapezius muscles in the shoulders are working extra hard, constantly, to hold the head up. This creates tension and generally, ultimately spasm in those muscles, causing pain and discomfort.
The treatment is gentle adjustments to restore motion to the neck, massage therapy to relax the muscles and corrective exercises to strengthen the posterior muscles in the neck thus pulling the head back.
As opposed to just taking pills which only cover the symptom temporarily, this is a long term treatment which will add years to your life, and life to your years.
Until next time, Be Well!
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince

Fact or Fiction: 7 Myths About Back Pain
Dear Practice Members,
Here’s an interesting post on Back Pain – let me know what you think!
Some astonishing facts regarding back pain. First, it affects roughly 31 million Americans at any given time. Second, one half of all working Americans admits to having back symptoms each year. Finally, the cost of this care is estimated to be a staggering $50 Billion yearly!
So it would make sense to evaluate some of the common perceptions about back pain and determine if they are fact or fiction. This way we can practice prevention as well as have better information to make better decisions about our health.
- Bed rest until the pain goes away. This is Fiction. In an acute situation, you may need to rest for the initial healing to begin, but following that it’s better to be active and treat the root of the problem.
- Overweight people suffer more back pain. This is Fact. The body has a natural structure to it based on the ideal weight of that particular body. Increasing the weight in certain areas, the stomach for example, will throw off that balance and create undue stress on the spine. Result: back pain.
- Exercise creates more back pain. This is Fiction. Regular exercise can be preventative in nature provided that you also strengthen the muscles holding the spine in place. In acute situations it may be a good idea to slow down the exercise though until some of the healing has had a chance to take place.
- A firm mattress is best for your back. Nothing is 100% but in most cases this is a Fact. The spine needs support in the proper position and very soft beds do not provide that support, allowing undue stress on the spine.
- Back pain is always caused by an injury. This is Fiction. Back pain can be caused by degeneration, infection, disease and other inherited conditions.
- Skinny people do not suffer back pain. This is Fiction. Stress and injuries can affect skinny people as well, creating back pain for them.
- Chiropractic can help with back pain. This is Fact. There are numerous studies supporting this as well as thousands of patient testimonials.
I hope this information is helpful in determining where your back pain may or may be coming from and will help you make a more informed decision regarding your health.
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince

Simple vs. Easy
Dear Practice Members,
Today we’re going to relate health with golf and the old saying, Simple vs. Easy. Often we get these two terms confused for being the same. They are far, far from it! Let me explain what I mean using golf.
Whether you play golf or not you have to admit, it’s a simple game. Notice, I did NOT say easy game. What’s the difference?
Think about the game of golf for a second. You are trying to hit a small white ball into a little hole with a fancy metal club. Who ever gets it in with the fewest amount of hits, wins. Doesn’t get much simpler than that! It is not hard to understand how golf works because it is simple.
With that being said, it is FAR from easy. Many people spend their entire lives trying to perfect their game and spend thousands of dollars on coaches, equipment, and anything else that will give them a leg up.
Golf is a fun (and for me, sometimes quite frustrating) game but I use it only as an illustration. You see, many things in life are simple and we assume that since they are simple, then they must be easy as well. And that is just not the case. Marriage is simple, not easy. Success is simple, not easy. Parenting is simple, not easy. Rocket science is not simple and not easy. (just had to see if you were still paying attention.)
Health is much the same. By keeping your spine aligned properly and making sure your nervous system is free from interference your entire body can function the way it is supposed to. It’s simple. It’s not always easy though. Sometimes it’s hard to remember this when you’re feeling well. It definitely takes commitment, but man is it worth it! By taking care of your body now – it will pay you back in huge dividends in the future. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to work really hard and save money, only to have your health give out just when you’re ready to enjoy the fruits of your labor!
Most people find success when they commit to doing common things with an uncommon consistency. Good luck and if you need help, just ask! That’s what I’m here for
Sincerely,
Dr. Vince
